If you have any involvement with the engineering industry, you’ll no doubt know the name ‘Howden’. Pioneers of revolutionary gas and air handling solutions, they supply companies involved in power generation and petrochemicals. They’ve also been in business for over 160 years, employ a globally mobile workforce of over 6000 employees and maintain a presence in around 100 different countries.
We knew that for industry leaders like Howden, performance and reliability are crucial in their day-to-day work – the quality of their internal comms had to stand up to the same rigorous standards. Their 50-person internal comms team needed a translation partner who they could trust to produce high-quality, localised messaging that would really speak to everyone in their company.
They were searching for a translation partner who could not only comfortably handle the 30 different languages they needed to communicate in, but also ‘got’ what they did, industry jargon and all – one who would take care of the entire process; translation, revision editing and formatting. All for a sensible price that reflected the high volume of work they needed to translate.
The work we’d be translating was intended to be presented by the Company President at formal presentations, so everything had to be perfect given this high-profile context.
The stakes were high, but we’re pleased to say that we delivered on all of the above and cultivated a long-term relationship with Howden. Here’s how that worked in practice.
In order to honour their carefully crafted comms we knew that our translators would have to be deeply familiar with the unique terminology of the industry from the word go. This meant that our client could rely not only on accuracy, but would also not have to take the time out of their day to confirm and double check any queries that might have arisen.
Another efficiency measure that our client loved was our in-house design capabilities. Instead of sending our translations over as a plain text document, we would return print-ready designs. This meant that we could make sure the translated text made sense within the context of the design (e.g. line breaks in the right place, foreign alphabets typeset correctly). Not only did our expertise make the difference, but our client didn’t have the extra cost of having to engage a designer and pay for their time.
All this was serviced by our dedicated Account Manager, who was sure to know each project inside out and react quickly given the very tight turnaround times. Not only that but we made ourselves easily contactable if any issues or questions arose – even taking calls out of hours and working over weekends to suit certain time differences.
We’re proud to say that we effectively acted as a competitively priced ‘one-stop-shop’ for Howden’s translations needs, eventually becoming more of a partner than supplier.
