Our interns: An interview with Nina Bourner

At McFelder Translations, our Internship Training Programme is established to offer undergraduates an invaluable start in the world of business and our interns play a huge part here at McFelder.

We interviewed Nina who has been with us for the past year and sadly her internship is coming to an end this July. Nina shares her experience with McFelder, what attracted her to apply for a role with us and what has been the highlight of her internship.

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you’re studying.

I’m a Linguistics and Spanish student at the University of Manchester. I’ll be starting my fourth and final year in September after having spent a year on placement at McFelder. Alongside languages, my main interests are animal rights and travelling.

What attracted you to apply for the intern position within McFelder?

For my placement year I knew that I wanted to try and find an opportunity within the translation sector as it’s an area of work that I have always considered for my career. The prospect of there being so much to learn here at McFelder and having responsibilities that would develop skills useful in both the translation industry and wider industries is what drew me to apply. The skills an applicant would acquire were set out clearly at the time of application and made me confident that the year would be an enriching experience.

How have you enjoyed working in the office?

It’s been a great learning opportunity to see and understand the day-to-day running of a business like McFelder. Being in the office has meant that I’ve been able to learn closely from colleagues who are very experienced and knowledgeable in their careers. There’s a strong teamwork dynamic and everyone’s happy to help!

What has your experience been?

My experience here has been really positive and feels like it has flown by in no time! I think that being at McFelder for a year has really allowed me to understand the business and wider industry in depth and develop skills that will be invaluable for career development opportunities. I also have to add that this area of the world is beautiful, so it helps to have lots of places to explore at the weekend!

What has been the highlight of your internship?

Being able to learn professional skills whilst also being surrounded by multiple languages everyday and being able to improve my Spanish in a natural learning environment has definitely been a highlight. It’s been so helpful in developing my Spanish fluency as conversations with colleagues have allowed me to practice and learn Spanish in the way that locals speak in contrast to the sometimes more formal way of speaking taught in education.

What has been the biggest challenge during your internship?

At first it took a bit of adjustment to switch between languages constantly, but it soon became easier!
