McFelder Translations: The Story So Far, Finding our ‘Nirvana’

Starting your own business is both exciting and terrifying. Making your idea a reality is a roller-coaster, but I’m so glad we strapped in for the ride. McFelder Translations is a translation agency run by myself (Fiona) and husband Christian. When we first began this journey, we deliberated over the pros and cons, but deep down, we knew there was a need for this service. Sixteen years later, we run a business that provides us with a great sense of personal fulfillment every day – you might even describe it as a ‘state of Nirvana!’

The Early Days

Christian and I are both Ph.D. chemists with more than 15 years of industrial experience under our belts. We understood that there was a gap to be filled for a translation agency that has expertise within technical fields and consequently in 2004, McFelder Translations was born. We dreamt of working in the B2B sector providing a technical translation service to global businesses, and now with a team of 10 we do just that. We are proud to say that we still work with some of the clients that we gained back in the early years.

Why Spain?

A common question we are asked is ‘why are you located in Spain?’. Although we originally envisioned our idea in the UK, Christian was raised in Catalonia and was keen to return to Spain. His family live in Banyoles located in North East Spain close to the city of Girona and the French border, it was an obvious choice for us. We feel fortunate to live and run our business in such an idyllic location.

The Growth of the Language Services Industry

With the growth of globalisation, the language services industry has rapidly increased in value. In the current climate, multinational companies need to communicate effectively to an international audience using multiple languages.

Although English remains a crucial language for international business, the importance and prominence of other languages such as Arabic and Portuguese are growing exponentially (https://medium.com/swlh/10-most-important-business-languages-in-global-market-17b49b7cf2d2)

Over the last fifteen years, our company has evolved alongside the growing importance of the translation services industry. We have built a strong client base and have included a range of innovative services to our original portfolio. In 2019, we introduced our Neural Machine Translation service, which automatically converts text in one language to another. These sorts of investments provide our clients with a trusted service that gives them a great experience, every time.

Where we are now

We have come a long way since our humble beginnings in 2004, continuing to expand and transform the service we offer with creative solutions that best meet our client’s needs.

Whether it’s with your team, suppliers or clients – we’ve learnt the importance of trusting relationships to run a successful business. It has always been our goal to become a trusted partner to our clients who add value to their organisation. It gives us a great sense of achievement to partner with industry-leading companies such as Wood and ESAB to enable them to communicate effectively to an international audience.

Starting your own business brings many challenges and is a steep learning curve. However, in our eyes, the advantages far outweigh any disadvantages. We are excited to see how the language services industry changes in the coming years with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation.
